Study Shows Skylights Contribute to Home Energy Savings

FORT MILLS, SC, May 25, 2015 - A VELUX America commissioned study showed results that adding venting skylights to your home resulted in energy cost savings versus a home without skylights. Denver-based Group14 Engineering, who specializes in energy modeling, daylighting and LLED strategy for businesses and architectural firms nationwide, performed the study in 2014.

VELUX Skylights measured factors with their skylights compared to whole house fans in residential homes. The three key factors were energy cost, indoor air quality, and human comfort. The study used a 2,000 square foot, two-story home in Boston, Massachusetts and measured two levels of energy efficiency: Code Base Home and High Performance Home.

Energy Costs - the study revealed that adding skylights resulted in an annual energy cost savings of $35 in the Code Base Home versus a home without venting skylights. The cost savings in the High Performance Home resulted in $17 saved.

Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) - in both model homes, the indoor air quality was significantly improved with venting skylights, reducing indoor contaminant concentrations.

Human Comfort - thermal comfort models were used to measure occupant's behavior and adaptions to natural ventilation in the study, and predicted that both the Code Base Home and High Performance Home would have improved comfort conditions with venting skylights. Although a whole-house fan behaves similarly to venting skylights, they do always reduce a home's energy cost.

Stephan Moyon, Director of Sales for VELUX America said, "This study, like an earlier Group14 study on the energy impacts of residential skylights in different climates, provides additional empirical evidence that natural light and passive ventilation from skylights can contribue to the home's overall energy efficiency."
